You are searching the archive for your great-grandfather's birth certificate. The name your family has used for generations is <\/span>Schneider<\/b>. But the church register states <\/span>Schnyder<\/b>. Or <\/span>Schneider<\/b>. Or <\/span>Schneider<\/b>. And in the passenger list of the ship that took him to South America, it became <\/span>Snaider<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is not an isolated case. Well into the 20th century, there was no uniform spelling for surnames. Civil registrars, priests, port officials, and immigration authorities wrote down what they heard \u2013 and that depended on dialect, native language, and handwriting. The Federal Administrative Office (BVA) in Cologne requires at least one birth certificate for each generation in the line of descent, and ideally proof of German citizenship.
