Well into the 20th century, there was no uniform spelling for surnames. Civil registrars, priests, port officials, and immigration authorities wrote down what they heard \u2013 and that depended on dialect, native language, and handwriting. The National Archives (NARA) and Ancestry.com are key points of contact here.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Former German Eastern Territories<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Civil registry records from Silesia, East Prussia, Pomerania and the Sudetenland are partly held by the Standesamt I in Berlin, and partly in Polish, Czech or Russian archives.
