As part of the implementation of an EU regulation, the electronic residence permit (eAT) was introduced in Germany on 1 September 2011.
The foreigners authority now issues the residence permit in the form of a card the size of a credit card, so that the sticker in the passport is now a thing of the past.
The following residence permits will now be issued as electronic residence permits:
- Residence permit
- Settlement permit
- EC permanent residence permit
- Residence card for family members of EU citizens who are not EU citizens
- Permanent residence card for family members of EU citizens who are not EU citizens
- Residence permit for Swiss nationals
- Blue Card-EU
Although residence permits are still applied for at the relevant immigration office, they are issued by the Federal Printing Office in Berlin.
Anyone who needs to apply for or extend a residence permit should therefore apply for a new permit at least two months before the old one expires.
